Morrowind (OpenMW)
OpenMW
RequiresMorrowind Game of the Year data (Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon)
PlatformsWindowsLinuxmacOS
OpenMW is a from-scratch reimplementation of the Morrowind engine. It runs the original game data natively, with modern resolution support, a better UI and its own construction set.
- Game data: a legitimate Morrowind install with Tribunal and Bloodmoon (Game of the Year is simplest).
- OS: Windows 10+, macOS 14.8+, or 64-bit Linux. 32-bit platforms are not supported.
- Disk: the Flatpak is small; the data files come from your own copy.
- Install the Flatpak (
org.openmw.OpenMW).
- Point the launcher at your Morrowind data directory; with a normal install it usually finds it by itself.
- Enable the Morrowind, Tribunal and Bloodmoon content files and start a new game.
- Modern engine: 64-bit, native resolutions, improved graphics and UI, better physics and scripting.
- OpenMW-CS: a replacement for Bethesda's Construction Set, shipped with the engine.
- Mod support: data directories, groundcover and script extensions; the compiler is stricter than the original, which catches broken mods earlier.
- No Wine: the game runs as a native application on every supported platform.
¶ Status and limitations
- Main quests complete: Morrowind, Tribunal and Bloodmoon can all be finished.
- Side quests: rare issues remain, tracked on the project's bug tracker.
- Mods: Morrowind-era mods are hit-or-miss; some depend on engine bugs that OpenMW does not reproduce.
- Version: 0.51.0 is the current release; 0.52 is in development.
💎 Diamond. 6,675 GitHub stars, above the 5,000-star Diamond floor. A mature engine with Windows, Linux and macOS builds, a deep settings and mod system, and the full Morrowind data import. It is pre-1.0 (0.51.0), which does not block the star-based tier.
